Civic engagement is important and should be started early, so I brought my 3 year old to welcome Joe Biden, our Vice President. A pro-life person came with a 10ft graphic image of a dead fetus. That image, to me, is of a dead body - the same as if someone died on the operating table or in combat and had a picture taken immediately upon death. I asked him to turn the picture away from my son, and he refused, citing free speech.
Free speech is vital. A sign with words of his position, or even a picture of a healthy baby growing inside a mother would have been fine. A 10 ft sign of a dead person with his/her skull crushed and entrails displayed would be objected to; why is desecration of the dead different if the person is a fetus? Showing that graphic image in public displays no respect for the dead child, no respect to living children who might see it, and no respect to parents wishing to protect children.
